The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has established the Arkansas Center for Aging to provide specialized care for older patients in need of services. This interdisciplinary program provides care for older patients with cognitive and physical disorders. These doctors treat patients at Baptist Health and UAMS. It also trains the next generation geriatricians.

UAMS, the state's only university of health sciences, includes colleges in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and a doctoral program. With more than 11,000 employees, it is also the largest state employer. In 2009, UAMS received a $3,015,565 grant from the Reynolds Foundation to support the Center on Aging.

UAMS Center on Aging offers senior expos at no cost to promote healthy aging. The expo offers information on various conditions and diseases that can affect seniors. It also includes health screenings for participants and door prizes. Participants can receive health screenings, nutritional advice and information on physical fitness.

The UAMS Center on Aging's partnership with community agencies is a key component. The center provides programs that help seniors improve their health, including an Alzheimer's/Dementia Program and a physical/exercise program. There are many Centers on Aging in the state. This gives residents access to specialist health care.

UAMS will participate in a five year fund-raising campaign to support its elderly commitment. It expects to raise $4335,700 over the course of the campaign. One of the parts of this campaign will be dedicated for infrastructure and educational institutions.

A third part of the plan will support research. UAMS officials have a vision of being a major extramural funding generator for aging research. They believe that the UAMS will become a national leader in recognition of a select group of national researchers. But, the medical institution has yet to reach its critical mass.

The Center on Aging takes steps to increase its ability to support many scientific programs. The university, for example, is looking to develop links with clinical programs such the Arkansas Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (Meals on Wheels) and Arkansas Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence). The center is also planning to develop a multidisciplinary team approach in senior care.

UAMS is also working with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging to develop the first state-wide interdisciplinary research program on aging. This partnership will tackle topics like food insecurity among the older, aging related suicides, as well as the role of family members and their impact on the health and well being of older adults.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was one of few academic health centers to use an interdisciplinary team approach for senior care. Through this strategy, a complete care plan is implemented that incorporates the needs of the patient, their environment, and the health and wellness of their caregivers.

UAMS also has a commitment to educating the public about aging and ensuring that the aging population has the best quality of life possible. UAMS offers education programs for older adults and their families.

How To

How to Locate Home Care Facilities

Home care facilities provide assistance for people who require it. Home care facilities assist those with chronic illnesses, such as Alzheimer's, who can't move or are too elderly to leave their home. These facilities offer services such as personal hygiene, meal preparation and laundry, cleaning, medication reminders, transportation, and so on. They often work with rehabilitation specialists, social workers and medical professionals.

You can find the best home care services provider by asking friends, family and/or reading reviews on the internet. After you have identified a few providers, you can inquire about their experience and qualifications. Providers should be flexible in their hours so they can fit into your busy schedule. Also, make sure they offer emergency assistance 24/7.

It might be worth asking your doctor/nurse for referrals. If you don’t know where to begin, search online for “home health care” or “nursing home”. For example, you could use websites like Yelp, Angie's List, HealthGrades, or Nursing Home Compare.

For more information, you can also contact your local Area Agency on Aging or Visiting Nurse Service Association for further assistance. These organizations will be able to provide you with a list containing agencies in your local area that are specialized in home care services.

It is crucial to find a quality home care agency, as many charge very high fees for patients. In fact, some agencies can charge up to 100% of an individual's monthly income. To avoid this problem, you should be sure to choose an agency that has been rated highly by the Better Business Bureau. Ask for references from clients who have used your agency before.

Some states even require homecare agencies that register with the State Department of Social Services. You can check with your local government to find out which agency registration requirements apply.

There are several things to keep in mind when choosing a home care agency :

  1. Be wary of any company that asks you to pay upfront before receiving services.
  2. Be sure to choose a reliable and established business.
  3. Get proof of insurance, especially if you're paying out of pocket.
  4. Check that your state licenses the agency you are about to hire.
  5. For all costs related to hiring the agency, request a written contract.
  6. Confirm that after discharge, the agency will provide follow-up visits.
  7. Ask for a list with certifications and credentials.
  8. Do not sign anything without reading it first.
  9. You should carefully read any fine print.
  10. Check if the agency is bonded and insured.
  11. Ask how long the agency is in operation.
  12. Verify the license of the State Department of Social Welfare for the agency.
  13. Find out if the agency has received any complaints.
  14. For information on home care agencies, contact your local government department.
  15. You should ensure that the person answering the phone has the qualifications to answer your questions about homecare.
  16. Contact your attorney or accountant to ensure you understand the tax implications of using home care.
  17. Always solicit at least three bids per home care agency.
  18. You can choose the lowest price, but not less than $30 an hour.
  19. It is possible that you will need to visit more than one agency for home care each day.
  20. When signing contracts, read everything carefully.
